Before you can take the theory test, you need to apply for a driving licence. You need to book an appointment for the theory test on Your Page.

You take the theory test at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon).

When your application has been registered and approved, you will be notified. You may then book an appointment for the theory test.

Are you taking the theory test for professional drivers (CPC), ADR, emergency response, winter operation and work notification, operator’s licences or pilots and drones? Then you have to book an appointment without logging in.

You may also fill in an application form on paperan application on paper, and send it to one of our Driver and Vehicle Licensing Offices.

At the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office

When you arrive at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, you will have to present valid proof of identity and pay the fee for the theory test. You will also need to take and pay for a photo for your driving licence. If you do not pass the theory test, the photo you take for the first time is valid for three years.

In the test room, you will be sitting in a designated room together with others, and you answer the questions on a designated computer. During the test, you can change the language at any time. It is also possible to browse through your answers before turning them in. If you find that you need more time, you may request an additional 15 minutes to complete the test.

You can ask for headphones if you want the questions and answer options read out aloud in Norwegian. For this you should select the language Norwegian bokmål.

Assisted theory test for special needs candidates

If you need more assistance, you can apply to take an assisted theory test as a special needs candidate. This is if you have difficulty reading and understanding the questions, want to take the test in a different language using an interpreter, or have other special needs that can be accommodated. During an assisted theory test, there will be an examiner present. The examiner can help you understand the wording of the questions.

After the theory test

You will get the result displayed on the screen immediately after completing the test. The result of the test will also be sent to you along with a summary of your answers under the various topics.

If you passed the theory test

If you are taking the practical driving test, you can do so now if you have passed the theory test and completed all mandatory training. Your training must also be registered in our systems.

You can track the progress of your training under “Your applications” on Your Page. You must pass the practical driving test no later than three months after you pass the theory test.

If you are getting a driving licence for mopeds (Category AM 146 or AM 147) or snowmobiles (Category S), you do not need a driving test.

If you failed the theory test

After you have found the result on the screen at the end of your theory test, you can review the questions you have answered incorrectly.

If you fail the theory test, you need to wait two weeks before you can take a new test. When you present yourself for the new test, you need to show valid proof of identity and pay a new test fee.

Theory test for moped (AM) and snowmobile (S)

For the licence categories moped (AM) and snowmobile (S) the theory test is the final test and valid for five years.

Before you take the theory test, the following must be true

  • You must have completed your mandatory training, and it must be registered in our systems.
  • The police must have approved your conduct history.
  • You must be 16 years or older.

You need to bring an eyesight or health certificate in the following cases:

  • If your answer to question 1 and 2 were both "Yes", you need to bring an eyesight certificate from an approved optometrist.
  • If your answer to questions 3 to 17 were "Yes", you need to bring a health certificate from a medical doctor.
