Renewal when you are approaching or have reached the age of 80
If you wish to keep your driving licence after you have turned 80, you need to submit a health certificate from your doctor.
How to renew your driving licence with a health certificate
Obtain a new health certificate from a doctor
You need to submit a valid health certificate – and, if applicable, an eyesight certificate – before you can renew your driving licence. You can obtain these certificates from a doctor, government-approved optometrist or ophthalmologist (eye specialist).
Send or hand in the original version of your new health certificate to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office
We need the original version of your health certificate, and therefore you may not send it by e-mail. It must not be more than three months old when we receive it.
Ask your regular doctor if (s)he can send your health certificate digitally to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. Your certificate will then be registered here as soon as the doctor has sent it.
If your doctor is unable to do so, you can send your health certificate by post to your nearest Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon).
You can also hand it in there yourself. You need to book an appointment for handing in your health certificate yourself at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
Wait for confirmation from us that your health certificate has been registered
It may take up to a week from the time we receive your health certificate, before it is registered in our systems.
You will receive confirmation by SMS and email once we have registered your certificate. You can also see on Your Page that it has been registered.
The term of validity of your new driving licence will be based on the date when your health certificate was issued.
Renew your driving licence on Your Page
Once you have been informed that your health certificate has been registered, you can renew your driving licence in our online facility on Your Page.
Renew your driving licence (log in)
You can also do this at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, and deliver the original version of your health certificate yourself. You need to book an appointment to do this.
Destroy or hand in your old driving licence
Your old driving licence becomes invalid when you order a new driving licence. When you renew your driving licence online, you are responsible for destroying your old driving licence.
You can also hand it in to a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, book an appointment for handing it in.
Get a temporary driving permit
If you have a digital driving licence, the app will display a temporary driving permit when you have ordered a renewed driving licence.
If you do not have a digital driving licence, you can get a temporary driving permit this way:
- If you renew your licence online, you can print out a temporary permit when you have paid for your new licence.
- If you renew your licence at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office, you will be given a temporary permit when you have paid for your new licence.
The temporary driving permit is only valid in Norway.
Remember that you must not drive a vehicle while temporarily ill, suffering from poor health or when the use of medication renders you incapable of driving safely. If you are uncertain whether you meet the health requirements, ask your doctor if you need a health certificate even if you have not reached the age of 80.
Your doctor is obligated to report to the county governor if you over an extended period of time (6 months or more) fail to satisfy the health requirements for a driving licence.
Is your driving licence still valid after you turn 80?
If you renewed your driving licence with a health certificate when you turned 80, the expiry date entered on your driving licence applies.
When your licence expires, you will need to renew it with a new health certificate from your doctor.
