Renewal of light vehicle categories
The expiry date for your driving licence may have been set because you had poor health or had not completed the night driving course when it was issued.
Regardless of what expiry date appears on your driving licence, you will have to renew it when you turn 80. You will receive notification three months before your driving entitlement (licence category) expires.
Renew your driving licence on Your Page
You can renew your driving licence yourself online on Your Page, or visit a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon). Book an appointment for renewing your driving licence at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office to avoid waiting.
What vehicles belong to “light vehicle categories”?
“Light vehicle categories” refers to moped (AM/M), passenger car (B, B96, BE), motorcycle (A1, A2, A), snowmobile (S) and tractor (T).
If you need to renew your driving licence because of your health
You need to submit a valid health certificate and, if applicable, an eyesight certificate, before you can renew your driving licence. You can obtain these certificates from a doctor, government-approved optometrist or ophthalmologist (eye specialist).
Send your eyesight or health certificate to your local Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office
We need the original version of your health certificate. It must not be more than three months old when we receive it.
Ask your doctor if they can submit the health certificate electronically to the National Public Roads Administration. If so, the certificate will be registered immediately when your doctor has submitted it.
If your doctor does not have this option you can mail your health certificate to your nearest Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
As soon as the Norwegian Public Roads Administration has registered your health certificate you will receive an SMS with information about this.
You can renew your driving licence once we have registered your eyesight or health certificate
It may take up to a week from the time we receive your health certificate, before it is registered in our systems.
Once we have registered your certificate
- you will receive confirmation by SMS and email
- you can see that it has been registered on Your Page
The term of validity of your new driving licence will be determined based on the date when the health certificate was issued.
Completing the night driving course
If you have completed a night driving course after your driving licence was issued, you can renew your licence as soon as the driving school has reported to us that you have taken the course. You do not need to submit a health certificate to renew your driving licence.
Does your driving licence expire when you turn 75?
If your driving licence expires when you turn 75, you can renew it without a health certificate. It will then be valid until the day before you turn 80.
Previously, you needed a health certificate to renew your driving licence when you turned 75.
Remember that you always should see a doctor if you are uncertain whether you meet the health criteria for driving licences.
Renewal when you are approaching or have reached the age of 80
If you wish to continue driving after you turn 80, you need to see a doctor to get a health certificate. Your health certificate will be valid for up to 3 years, depending on your health. The term of validity of your new driving licence will be determined based on the date when the health certificate was issued.
