When you need to take a test
When you need to take a theory test or practical driving test to get your driving licence back, you must apply for reinstatement on Your page.
When can you apply?
You can apply to have your driving licence returned or reinstated when the revocation period expires or is about to expire. You can see on Your page if you can apply now.
If your licence was revoked or suspended indefinitely
If you do not have an expiration date, you must first apply to the police to have your driving entitlement reinstated. Once they have approved this, you can apply to us to have your driving licence returned or reinstated.
Confirmation of your application will be sent to your digital postbox.
When you have applied, information about the test and the reinstatement will be sent to your digital postbox. If you do not have a digital postbox, we will send this information to your address in the National Population Register.
If you hand in your application to a driver and vehicle licensing office, you can also ask for this information there.
Applicants’ conduct history will be checked
We will send your application to the police for a check of your conduct history. This usually takes two to four weeks, but it may take longer.
You can see if your conduct has been approved, under Your applications on Your page.
What can you do if your conduct history is not approved?
If you think that new information may have an impact on your conduct history, we can order a new conduct history check. In this case, you need to contact us.
If you need to take a practical driving test
You can only take the driving test when the revocation period has expired. You can either authorise a driving school to book the driving test for you or book the appointment yourself.
You can take the practical driving test when
- the police have approved your conduct history
- we have registered your health certificate, if applicable
- you have passed the theory test, if applicable
Note: If you need to take both a theory test and a practical driving test, you can take the theory test as soon as we have registered your application.
If you pass your driving test with automatic transmission
If your driving licence is valid for manual transmission vehicles, it will still be valid for manual transmission even if you take the test in an automatic transmission vehicle.
If you pass your driving test with manual transmission
If your driving licence is restricted to automatic transmission with code 78, it will become valid for both manual and automatic transmission if you take the test in a manual transmission vehicle. The code will then be removed.
If you need to take a theory test only
You can take the theory test when
- the police have approved your conduct history
- the revocation period has expired
- we have registered your health certificate, if applicable
For what licence category should you take the test?
For all driving entitlements to be reinstated on your driving licence, you need to take the test in the highest category.
If you have two equal-level categories, such as C1 and D1, you only need to take a test for one of these categories. Once you pass the test, both categories will be reinstated on your driving licence.
Example: You have entitlements for Categories AM, B, C1, D1 and C.
- If you take a Category C test, all categories will be reinstated on your licence.
- If you take a test for Category C1, your entitlements for Categories AM, B, C1, and D1 will be reinstated, but not Category C.
The order of categories
Categories are ranked in the following order, from lowest to highest:
AM/S, T, A1, A2, A, B, BE, C1/D1, C1E/D1E, C, D, DE, CE.
Equal-level categories: AM and S; C1 and D1; C1E and D1E
Do you need to submit a health certificate due to your entitlements for heavy categories having expired?
When you apply for the reinstatement of expired entitlements for heavy categories, you should send your health certificate to your local driver and vehicle licensing office. You can also hand it in yourself.
You need to book an appointment if you want to deliver your health certificate at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
We need the original version of your health certificate. It must not be more than three months old when we receive it.
Apply for reinstatement using an application form on paper
You can also fill in the application form on paper. You can mail the completed form to your local driver and vehicle licensing office (trafikkstasjon), or hand it in there yourself.
You need to book an appointment if you want to hand in the application form yourself at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
