Category BE entitles you, among other things, to drive a passenger car and tow a trailer with a maximum authorised mass between 750 kg and 3,500 kg.

You must be at least 18 years old and have a Category B driving licence to get a Category BE driving licence.

Information about a vehicle or trailer, such as its maximum authorised mass, can be found in the Vehicle Registration Certificate.

Passenger car with trailer

You can drive a passenger car with a trailer when the maximum authorised mass of the trailer is no more than 3,500 kg. The car can be approved for no more than 8 passengers.

If you wish to tow a heavier trailer, you need to get Category C1 and then Category C1E.

With a Category BE licence acquired before 19 January 2013

You can tow a trailer regardless of its maximum authorised mass. In your driving licence, this is marked with code 79.06.

Tractor

You can drive a tractor with or without a trailer. The tractor must have a maximum speed capacity of no more than 40 km/h, and the combined maximum authorised mass of the tractor and trailer can be no more than 25,000 kg. In your driving licence, this is marked with code 144.

The driving entitlement for tractors is only valid in Norway.

With a Category B or T licence acquired before 1 January 2005

You can drive a tractor with or without a trailer. There is no limitation in terms of weight or speed capacity.

In your driving licence, this is marked with code 142.

Motorised equipment

You can drive motorised equipment with or without a trailer. Examples of motorised equipment include forklifts and wheel loaders.

The motorised equipment must have a maximum speed capacity of no more than 40 km/h, and the combined maximum authorised weight of the motorised equipment and trailer can be no more than 25,000 kg. In your driving licence, this is marked with code 144.

The driving entitlement for motorised equipment is only valid in Norway.

Motorised equipment for work or business purposes

If you are going to drive motorised equipment for work or business purposes, special requirements for training and testing may apply. 

The Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority will be able to answer what specific requirements apply regarding different types motorised equipment. 

With a Category B or BE licence acquired before 1 January 2005

You can drive motorised equipment with a maximum authorised mass of up to 7,500 kg without limitation in terms of maximum speed capacity.

You can drive motorised equipment with a maximum authorised mass of more than 7,500 kg if it has a maximum speed capacity of no more than 50 km/h.

In your driving licence, this is marked with code 152.

Closed snowmobile

You can drive a closed snowmobile (“beltebil”) with or without a trailer sledge.
