Category T entitles you to drive tractors and motorised equipment, among other things. This category only entitles you to drive in Norway.

You must be at least 16 years old to get a Category T driving licence.

Information about a vehicle or trailer, such as its maximum authorised mass, can be found in the Vehicle Registration Certificate.

Information about codes in your driving licence

A code entered next to Category T in your driving licence restricts or extends your Category T driving entitlement. If you have two codes next to Category T, both will apply.

For example, if you have both code 143 and 144:

  • Because you have code 143, you can drive a tractor with a trailer without limitation in terms of speed capacity. The trailer must have a maximum authorised mass of no more than 750 kg.
  • Because you have code 144, you can still tow a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg, but then the tractor must not be able to drive faster than 40 km/h.

Tractor

You can drive a tractor with or without a trailer. The tractor must have a maximum speed of no more than 40 km/h, and the combined maximum authorised mass of the tractor and trailer can be no more than 25,000 kg.

The weight restriction will no longer apply when you have held Category T for two years or have reached the age of 21.

The various codes restrict and extend your driving entitlement in the following ways:

Code 141 – higher speed

If you have code 141 in your driving licence, you can drive a tractor with a maximum speed capacity of 50 km/h. You can get code 141 by taking a course at a driving school.

Code 142 – no limitations in terms of weight or speed capacity

If you have code 142 in your driving licence, there are no limitations in terms of weight or speed capacity. You will get code 142 if you acquire Category CE.

If you acquired a driving licence for tractors or passenger cars before 1 January 2005, you will also have code 142.

Code 143 – limited trailer weight, no limitation in terms of speed capacity

If you have code 143 in your driving licence, the trailer can have a maximum authorised mass of no more than 750 kg. There is no limitation in terms of speed capacity. You will get code 143 if you acquire Category C.

Code 144 – Limited combined maximum authorised mass

If you have code 144 in your driving licence, the combined maximum authorised mass of tractor and trailer can be no more than 25,000 kg. Maximum speed is 40 km/h. You will get code 144 if you acquire Category BE.

Code 148 – higher speed, limited combined maximum authorised mass

If you have code 148 in your driving licence, you can drive a tractor with a maximum speed capacity of 50 km/h. The combined maximum authorised mass of the tractor and trailer can be no more than 25,000 kg. You can get code 148 if you have code 144 and take a course at a driving school.

Code 147 and code 149 – driving entitlement for mopeds with three or four wheels

See “Moped with three or four wheels” below. When you acquire Category T, you will get code 147 if you are at least 18 years old, and code 149 if you are under 18.

Motorised equipment

You can drive motorised equipment with or without a trailer. Examples of motorised equipment include forklifts and wheel loaders.

The motorised equipment must have a maximum speed of no more than 40 km/h, and the combined maximum authorised weight of the motorised equipment and trailer can be no more than 25,000 kg.

The weight restriction will no longer apply when you have held Category T for two years or have reached the age of 21.

If one or more codes are entered next to Category T in your driving licence, these also apply to motorised equipment. We have explained the codes in the section on tractors above.

If you have Category T without codes, you can also drive motorised equipment, with or without a trailer, that is not designed for transporting passengers or goods. It must have a maximum speed capacity of no more than 30 km/h.

ATV

You can drive an ATV that is registered as a tractor. The same rules then apply as for tractors.

Moped with three or four wheels

You can drive any type of moped with three or four wheels.

If the moped's unladen weight (weight without the driver) is more than 150 kg, you must be at least 18 years old. If the moped is electrically powered, the batteries should not be included in the moped’s unladen weight.

Snowmobile

With a Category T licence acquired before 1 July 2006

You can drive a snowmobile with or without a trailer sledge.

In your driving licence, this is marked as Category S.

The driving entitlement for snowmobiles is valid in Norway and Sweden.
