VegDim is an analytical pavement design and analysis system that will help us to construct and maintain roads in a more effective way.

VegDim is the Norwegian online version of ERAPave PP (Elastic Response Analysis of Pavements – Performance Predictions) from the Swedish Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI). In addition, we have digitised the current experience-based design method that is built in as an option in VegDim.

The Swedish ERAPave PP programme was chosen after considering available mechanistic-empirical systems suitable for Norwegian conditions. Developed by VTI in collaboration with Trafikverket and Statens vegvesen, it is adapted to Norwegian conditions (materials, climate data and traffic loads).

VegDim began as an R&D programme with the aim of developing and implementing an analytical pavement design and analysis system. VegDim is now the name of this data programme.

Benefits

  • Reduced costs for management, operation and maintenance of roads - lower consultancy costs and a longer lifespan for road structures
  • Improved requirement compliance - the user is notified when requirements are not met
  • Lower emissions - lifespan forecast gives more realistic environmental impact calculations
  • More knowledge – consequences of different choices, standards and quality
  • Increased data quality, documentation and accuracy
  • Reduced construction costs - greater flexibility in choosing solutions

Adopting ERAPave PP gives greater flexibility in the choice of both materials and layer thickness compared to today’s practice, which is based on empirical methods (N200 Vegbygging). The transition to an analytical design system will allow consideration of the local conditions (available materials, traffic loads, climate) and provide a better understanding of the pavement deterioration.

The new system is integrated in N200 Vegbygging.
