Technology qualification
Technology qualification reduces uncertainties.
One of the risk factors in the project is related to the development and implementation of new technological solutions. This entails uncertainty regarding, among other things, how much a utility structure will cost, when it can be completed, what requirements we will make to it and whether it will satisfy these.
To reduce the uncertainties, we have initiated a so-called "technology qualification" of the concepts and technologies that are developed for the individual fjord crossings. This is a systematic process to increase the likelihood that a given technology will meet the requirements under given conditions and with an acceptable degree of certainty, before a construction is built.
Such processes have previously primarily been used on technology for utilisation offshore in the oil industry and is therefore being further developed to meet the requirements of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
The process consists roughly of establishing a qualification basis, assessing technology and risk, preparing and implementing a qualification plan and evaluation of the results.
So far, we have initiated a process of technology qualification of automated laser and laser hybrid welding, with the assumption that the technology will result in welds that have at least as good properties as welds produced through more traditional welding processes.
