Submit the Notification of Sale
If you are selling, buying or transferring the ownership of a vehicle, you need to submit a Notification of Sale.
It is quick and easy to submit the Notification of Sale online. Both the buyer and the seller can submit the Notification of Sale, and we recommend that you do this together.
Before you submit the Notification of Sale
Before you log in, you will need the following information about the buyer and (if applicable) co-owner:
- Name
- Norwegian national ID number/D number
- Mobile phone number
If you are selling the vehicle to a company, you will need its organisation number.
We recommend that you and the buyer sign a purchase agreement (Norwegian Consumer Council). If you have personalised number plates, you must remember to remove the link to your personalised number plates before selling your vehicle.
How to do it
- Start by checking each other's proof of identity.
- Log in to Your page and send the Notification of Sale to the buyer.
- The buyer receives an SMS and confirms the Notification of Sales online.
- When the buyer has confirmed it, you will receive an SMS saying that the change of ownership has been completed and that the Notification of Sale has been registered in our systems.
If you co-own the vehicle with another person, your co-owner also needs to confirm the Notification of Sale. If the buyer and (if applicable) co-owner do not confirm the Notification of Sale, you will still be responsible for the vehicle.
Before you hand over the vehicle you must remember to remove the AutoPASS tag from your car, and cancel your AutoPASS contract for this vehicle. Your insurance will be cancelled automatically from the day before the date of effect. The date of effect is the day when the Notification of Sale is confirmed by all parties (buyer and any co-owners). You are responsible for seeing to it that the vehicle is insured up to and including the day before the date of effect.
Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC)
You do not have to submit Part 2 of the VRC when you submit the Notification of Sale online. Part 1 must accompany the vehicle, whereas you keep Part 2 and destroy it when the change of ownership has been completed. If you have lost the VRC, you do not need to report it as lost when you submit the Notification of Sale online.
The new owner will receive a new VRC by post.
Registration transfer fee
It is the buyer who is responsible for seeing to it that the registration transfer fee is paid.
Buying a deregistered vehicle
It is a good idea to check the registration status of the vehicle before you start using it. The vehicle may have been deregistered even if it has number plates on. If you find that the vehicle has been deregistered, you must remember to register the vehicle before you start using it. You can do this yourself on Your Page once the vehicle has valid insurance and all other conditions for registration are met.
If the number plates on the vehicle have been confiscated by the police, Customs or the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, you may have to pay a fee to get the number plates back (re-registration fee). Confiscated number plates are stored for 3 months at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office before they are destroyed. You pay the fee when you register the vehicle, either on Your Page or at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office.
Buying or selling when you are under 18
If you are under 18 and buying a vehicle,
- your parents or guardian must log in to Your Page and send the Notification of Sale to the seller on your behalf.
- your parents or guardian must upload documentation of their consent (Norwegian only, PDF) to your buying the vehicle.
If you are under 18 and selling a vehicle, you can sell it yourself on Your Page.
You can also buy or sell a vehicle by submitting the Notification of Sale on paper. If you are buying a vehicle, you must also submit documentation of consent from your parents or guardian.

If you are unable or unwilling to submit the Notification of Sale online, you can send us the Notification of Sale on paper.
Who can use the online facility?
In order to log in you need a Norwegian national ID number or a D number. This facility may be used by both private individuals and companies. In order to use the facility on behalf of a company you must have rights in Altinn.
