Here you will find information about age limits, languages, time available, number of questions and number of correct answers needed to pass.

What languages are the theory test available in?

You can take all theory tests in Norwegian ‘bokmål’ and 'nynorsk'. For some categories, you can take the theory test in other languages:

  • Category B: Northern Sámi, English, Sorani, Arabic (MSA) and Turkish
  • Category AM 146, AM 147, A1, A2 and A: English
  • Category S: Northern Sámi and English

If you wish to take the test in a different language, you can apply for an assisted theory test for special needs candidates.

Permitted aids

You can use the aids mentioned next to each category below. If a category is not mentioned here, no aids can be used for that category.

  • Categories C1 and D1: calculator, rough sheets, and pen or pencil
  • Categories C, CE and D: road list marked "Teoriprøve", calculator, rough sheets for load calculation, and pen or pencil
  • Driver CPC (all): road list marked "Teoriprøve", calculator, rough sheets for CPC, and pen or pencil

Calculators, rough sheets, pens and pencils are available at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office. It is not possible to bring your own aids.

Audio support

If you wish to have the questions read out aloud (in Norwegian ‘bokmål’), there are headphones available at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office upon request. You do not need to apply in advance for this.

Age requirements for theory test

Here you will find the age limits for being able to take the theory test in the various categories.

Time available, number of questions and number of correct answers needed to pass

For each question in the theory test, you will have multiple answer options to choose from. Only one of the options is correct. You can navigate back and forth among the questions and change your answers before the time is up.

The table below shows the maximum amount of time you have to answer the questions, how many questions you will be given, and what the limit for passing is. It is possible to request 15 minutes extra time if you wish.

The theory test for the moped and snowmobile categories

For the licence categories moped (AM) and snowmobile (S) the theory test is the final test. You do not need to take a practical test.
