What can you drive with a Category B driving licence?

You can drive a passenger car that has a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg. It can be approved for no more than 8 passengers in addition to the driver.

If you have a valid EEA driving licence for Category B issued at least two years ago, you can drive a motor vehicle registered in vehicle category N2 (lorry). You can find out what vehicle category your vehicle belongs to by checking Section 5 "Classification" in the vehicle registration certificate.

The exemption covers motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3,500 kg but not more than 4,250 kg.

Mass exceeding 3,500 kg must

• be due exclusively to the additional weight resulting from the propulsion system, compared to the propulsion system in a motor vehicle of the same dimensions but equipped with an internal combustion engine
• not be due to increased load capacity

Please note that a trailer cannot be used when driving a motor vehicle that falls under this exemption.

It is also required that

• the vehicle is registered in Norway or in another EEA member state. 
• the conditions are documented in terms of a note in the vehicle registration certificate.
• the documentation of the conditions related to the motor vehicle is available in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English, and that it is carried in the vehicle while on the road.

You can tow a trailer behind a passenger car when the maximum authorised mass of the trailer is no more than 750 kg.

You can tow a heavier trailer if the combined maximum authorised mass of the car and trailer is no more than 3,500 kg.

The weight of the trailer must be within what the car is allowed to tow.

With code 96 – higher combined MAM for passenger car and trailer

If you have code 96 in your driving licence, the combined maximum authorised mass of the car and trailer can be up to 4,250 kg.

How to get a driving licence, Category B 96

If you want to tow a heavier trailer (up to 3,500 kg) than what is possible with Category B or Category B with code 96, you need to get Category BE.

How to get a driving licence, Category BE

You can drive any type of moped with two, three or four wheels.

In your driving licence, this is marked as Category AM.

You can drive a motorcycle with four wheels.

In Norway, you can tow a trailer of up to 750 kg if

• the motorcycle has a cylinder capacity of more than 125 cm³
• the motorcycle’s Vehicle Registration Certificate says that it can tow a trailer

With a Category B licence acquired before 1 July 2006

You can drive a snowmobile with or without a trailer sledge.

In your driving licence, this is marked as Category S.

The driving entitlement for snowmobiles is only valid in Norway and Sweden.

You can drive an ATV that is registered as a four-wheeled motorcycle. The same rules then apply as for four-wheeled motorcycles.

With a Category B licence acquired before 19 January 2013

You can drive a motorcycle with three wheels.

You can drive a tractor that has a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg.

If you tow a trailer, the tractor must have a maximum speed capacity of no more than 40 km/h.

The driving entitlement for tractors is only valid in Norway.

With a Category B or T licence acquired before 1 January 2005

You can drive a tractor with or without a trailer. There are no limitations in terms of weight or speed capacity.

In your driving licence, this is marked with code T 142.

You can drive motorised equipment with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg. Examples of motorised equipment (Lovdata) include forklifts and wheel loaders.

If you tow a trailer, the motorised equipment must have a maximum speed capacity of no more than 40 km/h.

The driving entitlement for motorised equipment is only valid in Norway.

Motorised equipment for work or business purposes

If you are going to drive motorised equipment for work or business purposes, special requirements for training and testing may apply. 

The Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority will be able to answer what specific requirements apply regarding different types motorised equipment.

With a Category B licence acquired before 1 January 2005

You can drive motorised equipment with a maximum authorised mass of up to 7,500 kg.

You can drive motorised equipment with a maximum authorised mass of more than 7,500 kg if it has a maximum speed capacity of no more than 50 km/h.
